11 Hidden Bars in San Antonio You Might Not Know Exist

Ok, so people say San Antonio’s not cool and I bet it’s because they don’t know how many cool hidden bars we have around the city. While they’re not all speakeasy level- if you’re not careful you’ll miss them. Maybe that’s the point but in order to impress your friends, I’ve compiled a list of hidden bars in San Antonio you might not have discovered yet.

Pastiche

Pastiche is a bar basically in a house. It has a giant sign outside but if you’re naive like me you’ll assume it’s an office or a fancy art gallery- it’s actually a European- inspired bar with a pretty dope bar program. So you’ll def want to stop by. Pro-tip: street parking is your best friend.

Downstairs at the Esquire

We’re gonna start easy, chances are you’ve been to the Esquire Tavern. Maybe you’ve been in a hurry and didn’t notice it had a downstairs spot. Not to worry, brother, next time you’re in Downtown San Antonio just check this bar out.

1919

Alright, I know for a fact you’ve passed this one. Located in the Blue Star Complex is 1919. It’s there if you know how to look for it. This speakeasy is dark, chill and a great place to hang out. They do have a set of house rules so please respect that.

Modernist

I know this spot is happening but like the other day I got stopped in the street and was asked if I knew where the Modernist was. And you’re damn right I did. The only sign you’re going to see is a mailbox with a small name. Sometimes the front door is open- other times it is not. Stop by the bathroom for a photoshoot and definitely come with a good idea of what you like. They really don’t have menus unless it’s specific events. Occasionally they have cool themes like mocktails.

need help ordering from a bar? here’s how to order like a pro

RD Bar

They pride themselves in being one of San Antonio’s speakeasies. I mean you need a “password” after all. All you have to do is text “210-605-2292” and make a reservation. It’s located behind the Barn Door restaurant and the cool thing is people don’t even realize you’re right there. There’s a large two-way mirror that lets the RD guests look into the restaurant.

High Horse Lounge

If you’re into dive bars but still want the secret bar vibe- High Horse Lounge is for you. Located on the Eastside is this casual white building with the words- High Horse Lounge on the side. Step inside for good music, cold drinks, and a great vibe.

Cellar Mixology

Under the rose is where you’ll find this St. Paul Square hidden bar. All you gotta do it pick up the red phone and by pick up I mean push the wall back to reveal the access point into the bar. They’re known for their iconic neon signs seen all over the ‘gram, CBD cocktails and signature mixology. Just don’t be alarmed if you hear lots of stomping. They’re located right under the San Antonio fave, Toro Kitchen + Bar.

Best Tickets

If you’re in the market for some tickets you might end up here and as an added bonus they have a hidden bar in the back. The way to get in is to get some tickets but hey it’s a cool perk. Before you head out- grab a picture of their mural on the side of the building.

The Green Lantern

The only you’ll find this bar is through the small green lantern hanging outside its door. There are no signs or anything near this Stone Oak bar. You’ve just gotta be on the look-out. It’s a great place for hiding out though.

Jet-Setter

Half of these places I’ve never been to alone the first time. I have to stay it’s because if I don’t have exact details on how to find this place then I’ll be the kid wandering around for hours. Jet-Setter was not one of those places. While they’re a subterranean bar- there’s a sign street level. Again maybe people don’t know they’re looking for this bar but they are. They’re hosts to cool pop-ups too so follow them to find out who’s stopping by.

Salvador Dobbs

Taking a drive up to the Hill Country soon? This bar is located in Boerne and while the main bar is accessible to everyone. They have a secret speakeasy room only available by reservation. So if you’re planning a trip- consider this.

There’s one more in the works and I’m literally waiting for the okay, go to release information on it this little guy’s gonna be tucked into a quiet community and I can’t wait to share it. As always be sure to follow my San Antonio Instagram @sanantoniolovelist to keep up with the latest.
